United is one of the largest airlines in the world and has one of the largest frequent-flier programs. It is also a member of Star Alliance, a global network including Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, US Airways, Air Canada and All Nippon Airways, and it has other airline partners that passengers can earn and redeem miles on. That network means members of United's Mileage Plus program can use the miles to travel to many countries.
