I inherited when I bought the place last year was no sapling. Towering 60 feet high and 80 feet across, a branch of the enormous box elder loomed about an inch from my gutter and banged against the house in high winds. The elder's tentacles, the size of trees themselves, weaved in and around city wires. The base of the v-shaped tree was beginning to rot and the gray hues of dead wood contrasted sharply with the yellows and deep greens on neighboring limbs. If the rot were allowed to continue, the tree would have become unstable. And the difficulty to remove it, as well as the price tag, would have skyrocketed.
